After treatment stops: what weight-regain research tells us.

A 2026 review explores the pattern of regain — and why a model is not an individual prediction.

Follow-up matters. A study of weight loss during treatment answers a different question from a study of what happens after treatment ends.

What was studied?

Budini and colleagues reviewed 48 studies of weight after GLP-1 treatment stopped. Their nonlinear model used six randomised trials involving 3,236 participants.

What did they find?

The analysis estimated that around 60% of the weight lost during treatment was regained within a year of stopping. This is a proportion of the weight previously lost, not 60% of a person's body weight.

Where does the uncertainty sit?

Beyond 52 weeks, the trajectory was extrapolated. The estimated plateau of 75.3% regain is a model projection, not a directly observed long-term outcome for every participant. Most included studies had a moderate risk of bias.

How to read the finding

Group averages cannot tell an individual exactly what will happen. This report does not establish a personal stopping or maintenance plan.
